Free software for Bible College Students: Part 2

After a good 5 month break, it’s about time for Part 2 in this series.Spreadfirefox Affiliate Button
You know Firefox. It’s a web browser, and like all browsers it allows you to get around the Internet, search google, walldrop on facebook, do banking, and everything else you want to do on the net. There’s probably no reason to prefer one browser over another
except…

for the extension system that firefox uses. No longer is a browser a browser, but it can be a music player, an Internet Relay Chat client or enable you to interact with files on a server.

But this is useful for anyone. I want to draw your attention to two extensions that are particularly useful for bible college students, and finally an essential extension for anyone.

1.) Search the bible directly through your search bar using BibleGateway.com (this link shows you how). A quick way to look up a bible verse, or search for a particular word whilst online.

2.) A much more powerful extension for Firefox is Zotero. Zotero is a library/bibliography management system that makes putting together references and bibliographies in essays a breeze. Go ahead a give it a try, but it’s such a great piece of software for students that it’s worthy of its own post (probably also in 5 months, so don’t hold your breath).

Finally, there’s Adblock Plus. Ads on the internet are not only annoying (and often inappropriate) but you pay for the privilege of being advertised to, as these ads cut into your internet usage. Adblock Plus is a handy utility that blocks ads – mainly ones with lots of pictures. It doesn’t seem to be able to remove the ‘text only’ ads that Google runs (like on gmail), nor the ads on facebook, but any ads it blocks is a good thing (TM) on my account.

Do you use firefox? What’s your favourite extension?

  1. Definitely Tax Mix Plus. Could not go without it.

  2. noscript – the shiznit on trapping javascript

ietab – allows you to open a tab using the ie rendering engine – good for when a page is playing up in ff but you coodint be bovvered opening up an ie window

download statusbar – quite useful for, um, downloading stuff

cooliris previews – good for surfing where a link looks half interesting

    and finally

flagfox – a bit pointless in this day and age where servers are all over the globe, but adds a bit of colour to the address bar

  3. Not particularly for students, but I use:

Delicious bookmarks extension (with Delicious) for easy searching of bookmarks

    DownThemAll for download management

Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer for synching between our desktop and laptop

ScribeFire for posting blogs from firefox

    FireStatus for posting facebook status

  4. i reckon if i actually have to do an assignment this semester i might be asking you to teach me how to use it – Zotero. Seems pretty good.

    Forecastfox for weather
    DownThemAll

  5. 1. colourful tabs. it’s pretty.

    2. tab mix plus. the glory.

    3. foxy tunes

    4. cooliris

    5. not an extension, as such, just a feature. As an alternative to the biblegateway search, I have a bunch of searches lined up with “keyword search”. The setup is as follows:

    i. go to the page you’d normally search from (ebay, biblegateway, wikipedia, google maps, google images, etc)

ii. right click in the search box in which you’d normally type your request

iii. choose “Add a keyword for this search”

iv. in the popup box, type whatever you want in the “Name:” box (eg ebay)

    v. in the keyword box type a one letter shortcut (eg. e for ebay, i for images, m for maps, b for biblegateway, w for wiki … you get the picture)

    vi. hit ok.

Now when you want to search in any of those pages, just open up a new tab and in the address bar type the keyword letter, then your search string (eg e rancilio to search ebay for rancilio espresso machines or b john 2 to lookup john 2 at biblegateway).

    it’s beautiful.
